Too hot to handle?
The Miami Heat and New York Knicks are set to reignite one of the most heated rivalries in NBA playoff history, dating back to the late 1990s and early 2000s. Bad blood looks to be spilled again, as both teams secured their spots in the second round of the playoffs with Game 5 victories on Wednesday night. The Knicks defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, while the Heat pulled off a stunning upset over the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks.
This playoff series marks the first time the two teams have met in the postseason since 2012. In the late ’90s and early 2000s, they met in the playoffs four years in a row, sparking a rivalry born out of a series of violent altercations among the players. But despite their intense history, the rivalry has remained dormant for the past decade.
Now, thanks to two surprise victories, the Knicks and Heat will face off once again in the Eastern Conference semifinal series that is sure to rekindle old passions. While the personnel on both teams has changed since their last playoff matchups, the fans have however remained the same; those who remember those bitter battles from the past will undoubtedly be cheering their teams on just as loudly.
